Regional Rangatahi Adolescent Inpatient Unit
Regional Rangatahi Adolescent Inpatient Service
The Regional Rangatahi Adolescent Inpatient Service (RRAIS) is the central region's acute adolescent inpatient unit, providing services for rangatahi aged 12-17 years who are experiencing acute mental health problems. It is a bi-cultural service based on Kaupapa Maori frameworks and mainstream clinical models. The focus of the service is both therapeutically based as well as activity based. Treatment is developed in partnership with the clients and the client's families and their care team.
There is also a day programme which is an integral part of the therapeutic environment of the unit. Together with Central Regional Health School, the programme aims to provide structured activity Monday to Friday to support each Rangatahi in their recovery. There is a mix of groups including - cultural; recreational; activity based; and cognitive. In addition to the inpatients, there is also space in the programme for 6 rangatahi living in the Wellington and Hutt Valley DHBs area. The aim is to assist rangatahi in making the transition back to community based support or to avoid admission to the unit.
