Being a Good Corporate Citizen

Being a good corporate citizen is about businesses not only serving their customers but also the customers' families and  whanau, their neighbours and their neighbours' neighbours; in others words, the community they operate in. A key outcome of corporate citizenship is that it involves a mutually reinforcing bond between the business and the community, resulting in benefits to both parties.

Te Korowai Whāriki's philosophy incorporates community-spiritedness of its staff.  Staff who are genuinely interested in giving something tangible back to the community by way of offering their time, talent and energy in response to specific needs of the community are involved in specific community projects.  When people choose to offer their resources freely they feel the warmth of connecting with those in need, and all concerned benefit from those simple acts of generosity.

Capacity to Offer

Our staff come from a multitude of backgrounds, talents and skills.  We have amongst us those who can do building, plumbing, painting, gardening, driving, cleaning, people who can teach, advocate, counsel; people who can cook, package, sell; people who can manage other people, manage money, manage resources.  Endowed with such a huge variety of skill sets, we are in an exciting position of being capable of responding to a large variety of community needs.

Types of Activities

Some of the activities we consider ourselves being involved with include;

  • Assisting teachers supervise a school outing or school camp or a creche
  • Giving a break to kitchen hands, cleaners, gardeners, etc at a rest home
  • Clearing weeds around community parks and planting natives
  • Helping with fund raising for charities
  • Giving a break to the Soup Kitchen hands
  • Making ourselves available to a community bureau to offer advice on mental health, general health, nursing, psychiatric, financial, employment, legal matters
  • Helping refugee families settle in a community
  • Providing education and information on mental health issues

Volunteers

There is significant support from our staff to offer something tangible to our community. Currently, the Good Corporate Citizen programme has staff involved in a Red Cross initiative in Porirua - the Breakfast in Schools programme. This involves serving breakfast in selected schools within the area. This excellent programme is based on the clear relationship between good health and learning.
