The Capital & Coast 2009 Quality Quest awards were held in November. The seven finalists demonstrated that quality was at the forefront of all staff actions, with everyone dedicated to improving staff outcomes, said CEO (and judge ) Ken Whelan. "Tonight reinforces to me that the work we are doing here is as good as anywhere in the world, so as judges we are placed in the unenviable position of choosing not winners and losers but winners and winners." Although our entry from TKW was not the winner it was Highly Commended - the title Seclusion: A nurse and consumer collaborative to reduce seclusion in Te Korowai - WhÄriki and was co-presented by Lynda Thoumine and Diane Sadler. Lynda and Diane have taken this project to several other forums and it has received a great deal of interest from other mental health services around the country. Very well done.
It was great to hear from Joanna MacDonald that we had a 100% pass rate in the recent psychiatric clinical exams - Adam Sims, Narmali Bandaranayake, Struan Robertson, Pam Darling, Rachel Kan and Sonali de Sylva. While we have had 100% pass before it is the first time that there were 6 candidates. Congratulations to you all.
On a less celebratory note, there has been a joint visit from ACC and the NZ Police District Commander to the DHB to discuss speed camera infringements. C&CDHB has a very bad record for a business in the Wellington area, with mental health cars contributing a large proportion of the offences within the organisation. It is important for all staff to actively participate in promoting safe driving habits and that, when driving in a C&CDHB car, you understand that you are representing the service and should be professional and courteous at all times.
Welcome to registered nurses Kurt Girdler, Eddie Ford, Clare Amii Hyde Kim Dougall, Roger Moore and Michele Love-Gray; Mark Esteves, occupational therapist, Karis Galbraith-Smith, administrator, Arthur Skeleton and Karewa Arthur, mental health support workers, Melanie Simon, social worker and Deanna Hollis, dual disorder clinician.
Sally Kane and Marciano Lim organised a Movember month to raise money for Prostate Cancer - the judging was held on 27th November. Not only were some very fine "mos" on display but there was a cake, pickles and relishes competition for those people who could, or would, not become hirsute. The cake winning cake was a fine looking specimen with strawberries on it baked by Gilbert - the other fine looking specimen was the winner of the Mo - Fritz, Diane Sadler won the pickle section.
